Why Savannah ?
Savannah has always been this enigma. Visions of the gentile south come to mind. It's the right size city.
been to Savannah so it was destined to be complete exploration. Since I went to Africa in February, I had
an extra week before I was supposed to arrive at my rental in Savannah so I went to Tybee Island, only 20
minutes away.
Walkability & Biking (4)
are some cobblestone streets that jar the bolts out of my bike and there are not as many bike racks as
avannah is a perfect biking city. It is completely flat. You can bike everywhere and it's safe. There
Sthere should be but it all works fine. I have done one bikeride "out" of Savannah and the roads did
avannah is a perfect biking city. It is completely flat. You can bike everywhere and it's safe. There
not have bike lanes but were also not too bad. I think the biggest drawback is that there are not a lot
of places to "go" but biking in the city is great. As for walking, same story. You can walk anywhere in
the entire city. Let's not forget Tybee that was also great for biking. Unfortunately biking between
Savannah and Tybee (20 miles) is a bit dangerous. And then there's Tybee beach....
My Temporary Digs
Broughton Lane. It's right in the historic district, walking distance to every single thing in Savannah and my
bedroom, obviously remodeled extensively, would have been the slave quarters. WOW! My landlords, Karen
and Ron, invited me to join their St. Patrick's Day celebration in the courtyard and I can't imagine a prettier,
secure little place.
Transportation (2)
Well, MAJOR drawback to Savannah. I think I mentioned that no one came to visit in this city. That's
because the prices to fly to Savannah are ridiculous and it takes forever even from the east coast.
The closest REAL airport is Jacksonville, FL and that's 2 1/2 hrs away. Atlanta is 4 hrs away. As for
transportation IN the city, it's just not necessary. There are buses but I haven't even used one.
Weather, Culture, Food & Amenities (4)
March was my Savannah month and Savannah is in the "south" and I thought March and South meant
warm....WRONG! But there were many sunny days and, actually, I would compare it exactly to New
Orleans in December. It was good. As far as "culture" goes, the art is a bust. The historical
preservation of the houses and architecture is amazing. The happy hour in the residential squares at
6 pm on Fridays is the perfect start to the weekend with the dogs and the drinks and the get into the
history thing. Other than that and the beach at Tybee, I don't know if there's enough to do here.
Real Estate (4)
Real estate is gorgeous here. These houses were built in the 1800's. Many are brick. There are even
some updated. They are stately and sit on streets lined with oak trees and azaleas. I could afford to
buy a 3 or 4 BR 3 story house in a nice neighborhood (downtown, Forsythe Park or Ardsley Park). The
lots are good sized. This is not really a real estate issue but it is a problem for me in Savannah. That
smell from the paper mill is so acrid, I just don't think I can stand it. People say that they don't even
notice it anymore but it takes the paint off cars so it can't be a very healthy situation. Maybe one day
The People (3)
This was the city where I met the most people, people who I actually did things with. Like Sarasota,
most of those I met were transplants. It feels like the Savannah society is a pretty "closed" group and
Vaughnette. What's hard to tell is whether your neighbors would actually invite your for dinner...
